Volleyball Triumphs Over Harvard, 3-1

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Big Red volleyball team found itself in the winning column once again on Saturday evening, triumphing over Harvard, 3-1 (25-17, 25-23, 21-25, 25-20), at Newman Arena in Ithaca, N.Y. for its 10th straight victory.

Cornell wraps up the weekend at 5-0 in Ivy League play, marking the first time that the Big Red has won its first five conference matches since 2005 when the team opened up Ivy League play 12-0 and went on to qualify for the NCAA Tournament.

Although Harvard put up a good fight and was able to steal the third set from the Big Red, 25-21, the Cornell trio of Jillienne Bennett, Madison Baptiste, and Jada Stackhouse was just too much for the Crimson to overcome. Harvard could not find an answer for Bennett, who collected a match-high 16 kills to go along with a .448 hitting percentage. Baptiste (13) and Stackhouse (10) also registered double-digit kills, and along with Bennett, the three notched 39 of the Big Red's 60 kills. Baptiste (.458) and Stackhouse (.471) posted impressive hitting percentages as well, helping Cornell out-hit the Crimson .353 to .231 for the match.

For the second straight night, Emma Worthington collected more assists individually than the entire opposing team. Worthington set her teammates up for success, collecting a collegiate-best 50 assists, one more than Harvard's team total (49). Worthington contributed in other areas as well, notching eight digs, five kills, and two block assists.

Seniors Lily Barber and Katie Randolph held down the Big Red defense. Barber tallied a match-high 13 digs, chipping in four assists. Randolph was a force to be reckoned with from the serving line for the second consecutive game, posting a match-best four service aces and adding six digs.

The Cornell volleyball team will hit the road next weekend for a pair of Ivy League road matchups against Brown and Yale on October 18-19. The Big Red will travel to Providence, R.I. on Friday, Oct. 18 for a 7 p.m. first serve against Brown before heading to New Haven, Conn. to face Yale at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 19.
