NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Junior
Julianne Mangano scored her third goal on the season but it was not enough as California-Berkeley took home the 3-1 win, Sunday afternoon.
The first quarter saw a lot of Cornell's defense. The Cal Golden Bears were hitting hard as they were able to get off 11 shots, but the Big Red defense stopped each attempt while senior goalie
Maddie Henry saved all nine shots on goal.
As it has been for the past couple of Big Red field hockey games, the second quarter saw more net action. The Golden Bears scored the first goal in the fifth minute of the quarter but Cornell tied the score less than five minutes later. After two Big Red shots on a corner freshman
Natalie Stone passed the ball to Mangano, who tipped the ball in for a backboard hit. Cal earned its one-goal lead back with 1:21 left to go in the first half and Cornell entered halftime down, 2-1.
The second half of the match saw less shots and more midfield-play as there were only five shots total, two on goal. Each team's defense was able to hold off the opposer's offense in the third as the score remained 2-1, but Cal was able to score a goal with less than four minutes left in the game to secure its 3-1 win.
The Golden Bears held the 23-10 advantage in shots, including an 18-5 edge in shots on goal. Cal also held an 11-6 advantage in penalty corners.
Henry made 15 saves against California-Berkeley to more than double her previous season-high seven saves.
The Big Red will be back in action as they host Bucknell on Tuesday, October 15 for a 5 p.m. matchup.
