Pienaar Penalty Stroke Lifts Field Hockey Above Bucknell

ITHACA, N.Y. - Senior midfielder Kirsten Pienaar made a successful penalty stroke goal to lead the Big Red to a 1-0 victory against Bucknell, Tuesday night.

The lone goal of the game was scored just over five minutes into the contest. At 9:27, Pienaar took a penalty stroke and dumped it into the net as Cornell took a 1-0 lead that lasted throughout the game.

The first half saw most of the action as a total of 17 shots were made. The Big Red held the first half advantage with 13 total shots but Bucknell held the 4-2 edge in first-half penalty corners.

The second half saw a lot of midfield play, with just six total shots. The Cornell defense, stopped many Bison advances to get into the circle, but the Bucknell defense was just as hard.

Senior goalie Maddie Henry saved three shots and earned her 22nd career win. With just four more wins, Henry will pass Kelly Johnson (2014-17) and become the Cornell record holder for career goalie wins.

The Big Red held a 15-8 advantage in shots, including an 11-3 edge in shots on goal. The Bison finished with a 9-4 advantage in penalty corners.

Cornell will stay at home to host Ivy League foe, #14 Harvard, on Saturday, October 19 for a face-off at noon. This game will be special as the team will be dedicating it to the Make-A-Wish foundation.
