ITHACA, N.Y. - The Cornell field hockey team played a hard-fought game but it was visiting #14 Harvard taking home the 2-0 win, Saturday afternoon.
Cornell dominated the first quarter with five shots and four corners but Harvard's goalie Ellie Shahbo was able to stop each of the Big Red's three shots on goal. The Crimson scored its first goal with 6:40 on the first-quarter clock, but the Big Red was unable to answer as the game entered the first quarter break, 1-0.
Harvard came back from the break with a hunger. The Crimson had four shots, to Cornell's one, but senior goalie
Maddie Henry stopped all but one shot. A defensive battle throughout the second quarter, the Crimson was able to score a second goal with just over a minute and a half left in the second quarter. The Big Red entered halftime down, 2-0.
The second half remained scoreless as both the Crimson and Big Red defenses worked hard to block the goal. Harvard and Cornell each had two penalty corners in the half, while the Crimson held the slight 4-3 advantage in shots.
Overall, Harvard held the 12-9 advantage in shots with a 7-4 edge in shots on goal. Cornell held a 6-5 advantage in penalty corners. Henry saved five shots for the Big Red.
