Barber Surpasses 1,000 Career Digs in 3-1 Loss to Yale

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Cornell women's volleyball team fell to Yale, 3-1 (18-25, 25-18, 25-15, 25-22), on Saturday evening at the John J. Lee Amphitheater, but Lily Barber's milestone accomplishment could not be overlooked, as the senior libero surpassed 1,000 digs for her Big Red career.

Barber, who notched 15 digs in the contest, becomes just the ninth player in Cornell volleyball history to accomplish this feat. She is also the first Cornell volleyball student-athlete to join the 1,000 digs club since 2014 when Natasha Rowland amassed 1,000 digs. After tonight, Barber has tallied 1,008 career digs, and that number is still growing.

Despite Barber's effort, Cornell could not overcome the Bulldogs, as Yale put an end to the Big Red's 11-game winning streak and handed Cornell its first conference loss of the season. After tonight, the Big Red drops to 13-3 overall and 6-1 in Ivy League play. The second half of conference play is shaping up to be thrilling, as Cornell (6-1), Princeton (6-1), and Yale (6-1) are now in a three-way tie for first place.

Jillienne Bennett and Madison Baptiste led the Big Red attack for the fourth consecutive match, as the sophomore duo recorded 11 kills apiece. Bennett also recorded a match-high four block assists, while Baptiste collected eight digs.

In her first match back, Jenna Phelps made her presence known, notching nine kills to go along with a .500 hitting percentage, two block assists, and a solo block. Joanna Chang added seven kills in addition to six digs and a service ace.

Emma Worthington (23) and Zoe Chamness (14) combined for 37 of the Big Red's 44 assists. Worthington was just one dig shy of a double-double, collecting nine digs.

The Big Red will look to bounce back next weekend when it travels to New York to open the second half of Ivy League play against Columbia. First serve is set for 2 p.m.
