ITHACA, N.Y. - The Cornell women's soccer team concluded its home slate on Saturday, Oct. 26, falling to Brown by a final score of 2-0 from Berman Field.
Cornell honored each its six seniors,
Chrissy Mayer,
Abby Adams,
Kennedy Yearby,
Karli Berry,
Juliana Comer and
Kaili Gregory before the match. Berry received an honorary start on Saturday due to her season ending prematurely and was allowed to kick the ball off for Cornell before being subbed off of Berman Field for the final time.
Cornell (4-8-1,0-5-0 Ivy League) hung tough with Brown (12-1-1, 5-0-0 Ivy League) for the entire match, playing well on the defensive end to cut down a potent Bears attack. Splitting time in goal, Mayer made two saves in her sixth start of the season. Mayer was relieved at halftime by freshman
Nicole Shulman who made one save. Brown narrowly out-shot Cornell, 15-10 overall and 4-3 in shots on goal, with the Bears also holding an 11-9 advantage in corner kicks.
Despite a strong defensive effort by the Big Red in the first half, Brown got on the board early with a goal in the 2nd minute of action. A long pass from Sydney Cummings was sent over the Cornell back line and found the boot of Brittany Ralphino, who chipped a shot over the outstretched body over Mayer.
Spyredes saw a chance at an equalizer in the 13th minute, but her shot toward the bottom left corner of goal was saved by a diving attempt from Brown goalkeeper Kayla Thompson. Freshman
Ashley Durik's chance off a corner kick in the 30th minute was also stymied by Thompson.
Brown extended its lead to 2-0 in the 60th minute following a successful penalty kick attempt by Ralphino. Bears forward Ava Seelenfreund drew a foul in the box which set up the opportunity.
Comer and freshman
Liza Mariner each put Brown on notice with shots on goal in the second half, but neither were able to find the back of the net.
The Big Red returns to action at 1 p.m. Saturday at Princeton.
