Women's Soccer Churns Out 15 Shots, But Falls at Princeton

PRINCETON, N.J. — The Cornell women's soccer team tied a season high with 15 shots on Saturday, but it couldn't overcome an early deficit in a 2-0 loss to defending Ivy League co-champion Princeton at Roberts Stadium.

Princeton (7-6-3, 2-3-1 Ivy League) got off to a quick start with a goal inside the first minute. Madison Curry took a throw-in along the left sideline in the middle third that was trapped down by Courtney O'Brien as she turned to the inside. She started to run diagonally toward goal, then uncorked a shot from 25 yards that zipped through a pair of players and into the night to the right of freshman goalkeeper Nicole Shulman.

Cornell (4-9-1, 0-6) then fell into a deeper hole in the 22nd minute on Abby Givens' goal. Sophia Gulati served a ball on a corner kick toward the top of the 6-yard box that Givens was able to place a head on. While there was plenty of air under the ball, it was placed perfectly back inside the near post.

Eleven of the Big Red's shot came in the second half. The first real chance came in the 52nd minute after a quick and long throw-in from freshman forward Liza Mariner was nodded on by senior forward Kennedy Yearby in the box. That allowed freshman midfielder Ashley Durik a chance from in tight, but at a severe angle – and Princeton goalkeeper Natalie Grossi made the save.

In the 74th minute, Yearby had a chance from eight yards straightaway that was deflected wide by a defender. On the ensuing corner kick, freshman midfielder Emily St. John delivered a perfect ball to the far post that somehow was kept out, then senior midfielder Juliana Comer blasted the rebound high.

Senior goalkeeper Chrissy Mayer was summoned to play the second half, making eight saves without surrendering any goals.

Cornell wraps up its season at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 9 with a visit to Dartmouth.
