Royer Shootout Goal Leads Cornell to Its First Ivy Win

ITHACA, N.Y. - Junior Grace Royer scored the game-winning goal during a shootout to lead the Big Red to a 1-0 win against Columbia, Saturday afternoon. With this win Cornell earns its first 2019 Ivy League victory.

Big Red goalie Maddie Henry was outstanding in the shootout, saving all five of Columbia's chances. Cornell had its first three attempts stopped by the Lions' goalie, Alexa Conomikes but Royer was able to get the ball past the netminder. As Henry stopped the final two attempts from Columbia the Big Red won, 1-0, after a hard-fought battle.

The Columbia at Cornell game turned out to be an even match as much of it was played in the midfield. Trading possession between the teams, there were only four total shots in the first half; one for Cornell in the first quarter and three for Columbia in the second. The Lions gained two penalty corners while the Big Red had just one in the first half.

Columbia came back from halftime with an offensive passion as they were able to gain six penalty corners in the second half, two in the third quarter and four in the fourth. The Cornell defense held true as the Lions kept pushing. With six total shots in the second half, three in each quarter, Columbia kept trying but the Big Red defense would not let the Lions score. Henry earned two saves in the second half.

Both teams came back with a fire in their play as the first overtime period saw highly offensive play. The Lions and the Big Red fought to hit the ball across the goal-line with four Columbia shots and five Cornell shots. The defense on each side kept up with their opposing offenses as the score remained 0-0 at the end of the first overtime period.

Another period with a solid back-and-forth was had as the second overtime period came and went. The Lions made four attempts at a goal but the Cornell defense would not have it, stopping each shot.

As Royer made the only successful shootout attempt the 1-0 win went to Cornell in the first round.

Overall, Columbia held a 15-10 advantage in shots, with a 6-2 edge in shots on goal. The Lions also held the 10-2 advantage in penalty corners.
