#24 Field Hockey Earns Its Second Ivy League Win at Yale

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Sophomore Claire Jones notched two goals to lead the Cornell Big Red field hockey team to a 2-1 win over host Yale, Saturday afternoon.

The Big Red found five shots with two penalty corners during the first quarter but the Bulldogs defense held strong as Yale goalie Sydney Terroso stopped all three shots on goal. The Big Red defense also showed their worth in the first quarter as it stopped each Bulldog attempt to enter the defensive circle.

Cornell came back from the break with a passion as Jones tipped a pass into the net for a Big Red goal just over one minute into the second quarter. Junior Taylor Gladd brought the ball down the right side of the field, with a curve into the circle, for a short cross to Jones. With 13:22 left in the first half, Cornell was up, 1-0. The Bulldogs came back to score a goal of their own with about a minute left in the half. With strong offensive play by both teams, the game entered halftime tied, 1-1.

For a second time, the Big Red returned from the break with a hunger for goals. This time a longer break for halftime, the Yale defense had the chance to set up to defy each of Cornell's attempts at a goal. But Cornell persevered with a goal in the last second of the third quarter. The referees called for a penalty corner with seven seconds left and Jones made the most of it. With junior Grace Royer and Gladd on the assist, Jones was able to hit the ball for a backboard hit. Cornell entered the final break of the game with a 2-1 lead.

The fourth quarter saw the same result as the first as neither the Big Red nor the Bulldogs were able to put the ball into the net and Cornell took home the 2-1 victory.

Senior goalie Maddie Henry played all 60 minutes and saved six shots on goal.

The Big Red held a 16-12 advantage in shots, including an 8-7 edge in shots on goal. Cornell and Yale were tied with nine penalty corners each.
