ITHACA, N.Y. – In its first meet of the 2019-20 campaign, the Cornell men's swimming and diving team dominated St. Bonaventure, winning 14 of a possible 16 events and downing the Bonnies, 202.5 to 95.5, on Saturday, Nov. 9 at Ithaca College's Aquatics Pavilion in Ithaca, N.Y.
New and familiar Big Red faces teamed up on Saturday, with swimmers
John Mahoney and
Paige daCosta and diver Brett Hébert emerging as the big winners. Mahoney picked up right where he left off a season ago, winning the 50-yard freestyle (20.78) and 100-yard butterfly (50.23) events. He also teamed up with
Dylan Curtis,
Ryan Brown, and
Ian Mackey in the 200-yard medley relay, helping the Big Red finish first in 1:33.81.
Paige daCosta started his collegiate swimming career on the right foot, notching victories in the 500-yard (4:39.96) and 1,000-yard (9:46.89) freestyle events. Several other newcomers found success, including
Alan Li and
Ryan Pirrung, who both won their respective events. Li finished first in the 200-yard butterfly (1:56.10), while Pirrung picked up a win in the 200-yard IM (1:56.73).
In the diving events, Hébert carried his momentum from the 2019 NCAA Zones meet into the 2019-20 season, winning both the 1-meter (310.90) and 3-meter (283.15) diving events.
Jameson Crandell finished just behind in both competitions, placing second in the 1-meter (263.95) and 3-meter diving (274.05).
Other event winners on the day include
Jack McSorley, who finished first in the 200-yard freestyle (1:44.90), and
Jacob Mullin, who won the 100-yard backstroke (52.16). Mullin, along with
Min Zhi Chua, Will Hrabchak, and
James Huang, picked up a win in the 200-yard freestyle relay, clocking in at 1:26.11.
In addition to swimming a leg on the winning 200-yard medley relay,
Ryan Brown won the 100-yard breaststroke in 58.69. After helping the 200-yard freestyle relay to victory,
James Huang emerged victorious in the 200-yard backstroke, finishing the race in 1:51.65.
The Big Red men's swimming and diving team will be back in action when it opens Ivy League competition against Harvard and Dartmouth on Saturday, Nov. 16 at 12 p.m. in Hanover, N.H.
