Seniors Show Off for Men's Soccer in 4-0 Win Over Columbia

ITHACA, N.Y. - Behind the performances of its seniors, the Cornell men's soccer team defeated Columbia on Saturday, 4-0, from a previously snow covered Berman Field. The men's soccer program worked tirelessly during the week, shoveling and moving snow to clear the field. A 4-0 victory was the perfect send off for a special group of seniors that included Riley Adams, Ryan Bayne, Brady Dickens, Ryan Hill, George Pedlow, John Scearce and Kyle Walsh.

"This is a group of guys that have been here since day one," said Cornell head coach John Smith. "They stuck with things when there were so many things around them that probably suggested they shouldn't. They showed grit and determination, and they're the reason the program turned around. They provided the platform for us to build something."

Cornell was efficient on offense, picking and choosing the perfect shots. Despite taking just nine total shots, the Big Red placed six shots on goal and scored three times. Scearce and Pedlow did most of the attacking for Cornell taking three shots each.

Columbia finished the day with two shots on goal, both of which were saved by Big Red goalkeeper Ryan Shellow. Shellow was great in goal Saturday ,posting his sixth clean sheet of the season and the ninth of his career.

The Big Red offensive attack got going early, taking a 1-0 lead in the 9th minute following a Columbia own goal. Griffin Garrard's shot on goal was deflected into the back of the net by a Lions defender, causing the goal to go down as an own goal. Pedlow was the first senior to find the score sheet, scoring for Cornell in the 36th minute. Pedlow settled a ball at the top of the 18 and used his right foot to beat the diving Columbia keeper.

Scearce continued the offensive barrage for Cornell, using his head to score off a Bayne free kick just three minutes later in the 39th. Dickens found the score sheet for Cornell's fourth goal of the afternoon in the 53rd minute, scoring on a wide open net after Brandon Morales drew the Columbia defense to him on the near post.

With a win on Saturday, Cornell concludes its season with a 10-5-2 record along with a 3-2-2 mark in the Ivy League. Over the last two seasons the Big Red have amassed a 21-10-2 record under the direction of John Smith.
