HANOVER, N.H. – Although the Cornell women's volleyball team fell to Dartmouth, 3-1 (25-18, 20-25, 25-21, 25-20), in its season finale on Saturday night at Leede Arena in Hanover, N.H., no one can take away the great season that the Big Red put together.
Cornell finishes the 2019 campaign at 17-6 overall and 8-4 in conference play, good for third place in the Ivy League. With the Big Red's third place finish, Cornell has ended the season at third in the conference standings for three-straight years. This span marks the best seasons for the Big Red since the program won three straight titles following a second place finish from 2003-06.
The Big Red's 17 wins this season marked the most for a Cornell volleyball squad since the 2006 campaign, when Cornell ended the season at 18-9 overall. Among those wins was a victory on the road against Princeton, who is in contention for the Ivy League title. It's safe to say that Cornell has re-established itself as a team in the top-tier of the Ivy League.
The Big Red was led on Saturday night by senior
Jada Stackhouse (14) and sophomores
Madison Baptiste (14) and
Avery Hanan (10), who combined for 38 of Cornell's 59 kills. Stackhouse contributed four block assists and a solo block, closing out her Big Red career the best way she knows how after being a blocking machine match-in and match-out for Cornell. Baptiste added 11 kills for yet another double-double.
Senior libero
Lily Barber tallied 13 digs, nine assists, and two service aces in her final game in a Big Red uniform. She leaves the Cornell program with 1,124 career digs, a number which ranks sixth all-time in Big Red volleyball history.
After Barber's nine assists,
Emma Worthington (31) and
Zoe Chamness (14) accounted for nearly all of the remaining Big Red assists.
This concludes the 2019 season for the Cornell volleyball program.
