ITHACA, N.Y. — The men's squash team rebounded from a tough loss in its season-opener with a pair of victories against St. Lawrence and Hobart on Sunday at Belkin International Squash Courts. The 13th-ranked Big Red toppled the 12th-ranked Saints, 6-3, before rolling to a 9-0 sweep of 27th-ranked Hobart in the evening.
Cornell's depth delivered against top-heavy St. Lawrence, withi the bottom five positions in the order all winning in three games. Sophomore
Charles Culhane accounted for the other point, rallying to win in four at No. 2 to help the Big Red sweep the opening rotation. Junior
Illia Presman (No. 5) and freshman
Humza Khan (No. 7) won in the middle rotation to clinch the match for the Big Red. Cornell broke a six-match losing streak to St. Lawrence, also avenging a loss to the Saints in the Hoehn Cup quarterfinals last year.
In the night cap against Hobart, Cornell (2-1) cruised to win eight of the nine matches in the minimum three games. Freshman
Brent Stein lost just four points in winning his collegiate debut at No. 5. The Big Red improved to 49-5 all-time against the Statesmen, having conceded just four points in the last 11 meetings.
Cornell returns to non-league action at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 4, when it hosts sixth-ranked Rochester at Belkin. The Big Red then opens the Ivy League portion of its schedule with its final match of the fall semester at noon Sunday, Dec. 8.
