PHILADELPHIA – The Big Red fencing team went 4-2 at the Penn Elite Invitational over the weekend, defeating Johns Hopkins, Northwestern, Temple and Yale. Highlighted by a 33-win performance out of a young foil squad, Cornell finished with a 94-68 overall record (Foil: 33-21; Epee: 30-24; Sabre: 31-23).
 
Cornell opened the day with a dominant 23-4 victory over Johns Hopkins, before falling to a pair of top programs in Princeton and Notre Dame.
 
The Big Red bounced back after a pair of tough losses to win three-straight and conclude the invitational with a strong 4-2 mark. Cornell defeated Northwestern, 16-11, in its fourth match of the day before narrowly defeating Temple, 14-13, by way of an incredible one touch overtime victory from Megan Eno.
 
Against Yale, teams were tied at 9-9 before Cornell turned in an 8-1 performance in Sabre to defeat its Ivy League foe. Marigot Fackenthal and Esther Bentolila each went 3-0 in Sabre against the Bulldogs to pace the Big Red.
 
Ying Cao (Foil) led the team with a 13-2 record in her first collegiate action for the Big Red, and both Madeleine Nishimura (Foil) and Gillian Harrell (Sabre) added 10 victories to their season total. In total, seven from Cornell finished the day with an individual record of .500 or better, including Grace Ding (Foil) at 6-6, Eno (Epee) at 9-6, Fackenthal (Sabre) at 9-3 and Bentolila (Sabre) at 7-7.
