Bennett’s First-Team Selection Highlights Four on Volleyball All-Ivy Teams

ITHACA, N.Y. – Following a 2019 season in which the Cornell volleyball team placed third in the Ivy League and recorded its most wins in over a decade, four Big Red student-athletes earned a spot on the conference's All-Ivy League teams, the league announced Thursday afternoon. Sophomore right side hitter Jillienne Bennett garnered first-team All-Ivy distinction, while sophomore outside hitter Madison Baptiste, senior middle blocker Jada Stackhouse, and senior libero Lily Barber were all named second-team All-Ivy.

After earning second-team All-Ivy honors as a freshman, Bennett took her game to new heights this season, becoming the 21st student-athlete in Cornell volleyball history to be named first-team All-Ivy and the first since Kiley McPeek in 2017. Bennett's impact when she was on the floor for the Big Red was electric, as she attacked her opponents with power and accuracy. She appeared in 19 matches this season, notching double-digit kills in eight of them, including an 18-kill performance against Hartford on Sept. 7. Bennett finished the season ranked seventh in the Ivy League and fourth on Cornell's team in hitting percentage (.306), while also ranking third for the Big Red in blocks (0.64/set) and kills (2.87/set).

Baptiste receives the first All-Ivy honor of her career after becoming a staple of the Big Red attack over the course of her sophomore season. As the year wore on, Baptiste got better and better, notching six kill-dig double-doubles in the last seven matches of the season. Among these performances was a 23-kill, 11 dig outing against Princeton on Nov. 1, in which Baptiste completely went off. She finished the season as Cornell's leader in kills (2.81/set), while also ranking second in digs (2.68/set). Her kills/set mark also ranked ninth in the Ivy League this year, and the 3.07 points that she averaged per set ranked 10th in the conference.

Stackhouse also earns the first All-Ivy accolade of her career, closing out her time in a Big Red uniform on a high note. Stackhouse was a blocking machine for the Big Red this season, finishing the year ranked first on the team and second in the Ivy League in blocks/set (1.22). She recorded at least five blocks on nine separate occasions, including a three solo block, six block assist performance against Brown on Senior Night on Nov. 9. Stackhouse was also one of the most accurate attackers in the NCAA all season, leading Cornell and ranking third in the Ivy League and 33rd in the nation in hitting percentage (.389). Even more impressive, the percentage ranks second all-time in Big Red volleyball history for a single season. Stackhouse completes her Cornell career sitting eighth all-time in program history in block assists (249), 10th in total blocks (271), and 16th in solo blocks (42).

A season after earning honorable mention All-Ivy League distinction, Barber finds herself on the second-team this year after controlling the Big Red back row with poise all season. Barber was a sponge on defense, leading Cornell in digs (4.06/set) and finishing the season ranked third in the Ivy League in this statistical category. Barber also excelled from the serving line this season, pacing the Big Red in aces (0.36/set) and ranking second in the conference. Barber has undoubtedly left her mark on the Big Red volleyball program, as she became just the second student-athlete in Cornell volleyball history to amass 1,000 digs (1,124) and 300 assists (341) for her career. She leaves Cornell ranked sixth all-time in digs and 21st in assists.

Cornell finished the 2019 campaign at 17-6 overall and 8-4 in conference play, good for third place in the Ivy League. With the Big Red's third place finish, Cornell has ended the season at third in the conference standings for three-straight years. This span marks the best seasons for the Big Red since the program won three straight titles following a second place finish from 2003-06.

The Big Red's 17 wins this season marked the most for a Cornell volleyball squad since the 2006 campaign, when Cornell ended the season at 18-9 overall.
