PRINCETON, N.J. – Led by a pair of victories from
Dylan Curtis and
Paige daCosta, the Cornell men's swimming and diving team recorded 10 top-three individual finishes against Penn and Princeton on Saturday at the Denunzio Pool in Princeton, N.J.
Despite a strong effort from the entire Big Red squad, Cornell was unable to overcome the Quakers and Tigers, falling to Penn, 168-132, and Princeton, 210-90.
Curtis had himself a day, winning the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 49.54, while also leading two Big Red relay teams to top-three finishes. In the 200-yard medley relay, Curtis, along with
Ryan Brown,
Jacob Mullin, and
John Mahoney, touched the wall second in 1:31.27. Curtis then guided the 400-yard freestyle relay of
James Huang,
Hunter Hitchens, and
Jake Lawson to a third place finish with a mark of 3:06.89.
daCosta emerged victorious in the 200-yard backstroke, winning the race in 1:48.16, a time which ranks 10th all-time in Cornell men's swimming and diving history. He didn't stop there, however, adding a third place finish in the 200-yard IM with a time of 1:51.83.
Ricardo Martinez was daCosta's partner in crime in both races, placing third in the 200-yard backstroke (1:51.07) and fifth in the 200-yard IM (1:53.47).
In addition to swimming a leg on the Big Red's successful 400-yard freestyle relay, Huang capitalized in his individual events as well. Huang recorded a pair of third-place finishes in the 100-yard butterfly (48.88) and 200-yard butterfly (1:49.48).
In the 50-yard freestyle, Mahoney made his presence known, placing second in 20.76. Brown swam a solid race in the 100-yard breaststroke, posting a time of 56.52 to place fourth.
The Big Red also had a pair of notable performances in the 200-yard breaststroke, as
Owen Downs (2:07.23) and
Ryan Pirrung (2:08.19) finished fifth and sixth, respectively.
In the diving events, Brett Hébert and
Jameson Crandell represented Cornell well. Both student-athletes finished within the top-five of both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events. In the 1-meter, the pair finished within a half-point of each other, as Hébert placed third (288.50) and Crandell finished fourth (288.10). In the 3-meter, the diving duo of Hébert (313.35) and Crandell (298.70) placed fourth and fifth, respectively.
The Big Red men's swimming and diving team will return to the pool when it hosts Binghamton in a non-conference meet on Tuesday, Nov. 26 at 4 p.m. at Ithaca College's Kelsey Partridge Bird Natatorium in Ithaca, N.Y.
