HANOVER, N.H. – Cornell men's soccer got back to its winning ways on Saturday, Nov. 9, defeating Dartmouth in Ivy League competition, 3-1, from Burnham Field. The Big Red matched its second-highest scoring output of the season in the win, tying the three goals scored against Mid-American Conference regular season champion Akron in a 3-2 double overtime victory on Sept. 28.
Prior to Saturday, Cornell's last victory over Dartmouth came on Nov. 9, 2013 in a 1-0 contest. A 46th minute goal from
Conor Goepel proved to be the game-winner for the Big Red.
Typically a fast-paced offense, Cornell (9-4-2, 2-1-2 Ivy League) took just nine total shots on Saturday to four for Dartmouth (6-7-2, 3-2-1 Ivy League) and edged the Big Green in shots on goal, 4-2.
First year
Brandon Morales broke through first, scoring the second goal of his career in the 13th minute off an assist from senior
Brady Dickens. Dickens played a quick pass back to Morales, whose right-footed shot deflected off the leg of a Dartmouth defender and into the back of the net. Dartmouth's goalkeeper had no chance of stopping Morales' strike after the ball changed direction due to the deflection.
Dartmouth tied things up in the 19th minute on a goal right in front of the net. A bouncing ball in Cornell's back line found the boot of Zach Kalk who fired a hard strike at Cornell goalkeeper
Brady McSwain.
A gaff by Dartmouth's defense gave Cornell its second goal of the match, via an own goal in the 23rd minute. Cornell sent a cross on goal, but in an attempt to knock the ball away, Dartmouth's defender kicked the ball into the back of his own goal.
Cornell extended its lead to 3-1 shortly following halftime, with an insurance goal from senior
John Scearce in the 52nd minute. First year
Will Citron possessed the ball out wide before passing the ball back into the middle for Scearce, who scored an indescribable goal from the top of the 18. Scearce has been on a roll as of late, scoring three goals in his last four matches and four in his last seven. With a goal on Saturday, Scearce tied junior
Harry Fuller for the team-lead in goals and currently ranks second of the team in points with nine (4g-1a).
Up Next: Cornell concludes its regular season next week with a home match against Columbia on Saturday, Nov. 16 at 4:00 p.m. Columbia is 4-7-4 overall with a 1-2-2 record in the Ivy League, and have lost two straight matches heading into a Sunday, Nov. 10 match against Harvard.
