Men's Hockey's Malott, Regush Earn ECAC Hockey Weekly Honors

ITHACA, N.Y. — ECAC Hockey announced Monday that Cornell junior forward Jeff Malott has been named the men's Player of the Week, and freshman forward Michael Regush has earned Rookie of the Week honors.

Regush and Malott were at the forefront of the Big Red's weekend sweep of the North Country teams at Lynah Rink. In the night's only match-up of teams ranked in the top 10 nationally, Cornell rolled to a 5-0 victory over Clarkson on Friday before cruising to a 3-1 win the next night against St. Lawrence.

Malott entered the game against Clarkson with one goal this season, but tripled that total in one night. His first goal was also the first of his collegiate career on the power play, then he capped the scoring with a four-on-four strike in the third period.

Malott added an assist the following night against St. Lawrence, which came on Regush's power-play goal in the game's sixth minute. Regush also scored on the man advantage against the Golden Knights with an unassisted, highlight-reel goal. His four power-play goals to date are the most from a Cornell freshman since current NHLer Riley Nash potted seven in the 2007-08 campaign, and Regush now has four goals over his last six games.

This marks Regush's second rookie of the week honor from the league, with the first coming back on Nov. 12 following a weekend series at Northern Michigan in which he scored a pair of game-winning, power-play goals. It's Malott's first career player of the week award, though he was once named the ECAC Hockey Rookie of the Week in 2017.

Now 15-6-2 overall and possessing a three-point cushion in the ECAC Hockey standings with an 11-3-2 record, Cornell climbed two spots to eighth in the USCHO.com poll on Monday. It's the team's highest ranking since Oct. 22.

The Big Red plays four of its final six regular-season games on the road, starting with its final Ivy League contests at 7 p.m. Friday at Brown and 7 p.m. Saturday at Yale.
