Men's Squash Seeks Fourth Hoehn Cup Title

ITHACA, N.Y. — The men's squash team will attempt to win the fourth Hoehn Cup in program history when it competes at the College Squash Association's 'B' Division national championship this weekend in greater New Haven, Connecticut.

The Hoehn Cup features the nation's ninth- through 16th-ranked teams, and Cornell (4-11) enters the weekend ranked sixth in the bracket and 14th overall in the country. That lands the Big Red a quarterfinal match against No. 11 St. Lawrence (5-7) at 1 p.m. Friday at Yale's Brady Squash Center.

The Big Red finished eighth in the Hoehn Cup last season and 16th in the country in the CSA's final rankings. After starting the year ranked 15th in the nation, Cornell slid down one spot to 16th in late November before moving up to its current placement of 14th after handing 12th-ranked Navy one of its four defeats in 17 matches this year.

Cornell, which last won Hoehn Cups in 1993, 2006 and 2007, starts play against a Saints squad it hasn't seen since Jan. 24, 2016, when St. Lawrence won its fifth straight match in the all-time series between the program's after Cornell rattled off eighth victories to start. The Saints were in the midst of the program's heyday at the time, reaching the Potter Cup national championship match the year prior. St. Lawrence then ended last season ranked fourth in the country before sliding to its current 11th place. After serving as an assistant coach at Cornell for portions of three seasons, Scott Denne took over the head coaching duties of St. Lawrence in the middle of this season.

Sophomore Yohann Surti leads the team in victories with an 8-4 record from the lower third of the order, and freshmen Charles Culhane (No. 2), and Nicholas Göth Errington (No. 6) are close behind at 7-8. Seniors Andy Muran (6-9) and Perry Hanson (5-10) join Culhane in the top third. Cornell is coming off a strong performance in which it fell just short, 5-4, in the regular-season finale against seventh-ranked Princeton on Feb. 10.

Another Hoehn Cup quarterfinal, No. 10 Western Ontario and No. 15 George Washington, will run simultaneous to the action between Cornell and St. Lawrence. The winners of those two matches will meet in the semifinals at 3 p.m. Saturday, while the losers square off at 11 a.m. Saturday. Friday's other quarterfinal matches pit No. 9 vs. No. 16 Franklin & Marshall and No. 11 Drexel vs. No. 12 Navy.

All of the Hoehn Cup's matches will be staged at Brady Squash Center with the exception of Sunday's 15th-place match, which is scheduled for Wesleyan's Rosenbaum Squash Center in Middletown, Connecticut.
