HARTFORD, Conn. — Senior
Hannah Scherl and junior
Colby Gallagher won their respective matches in five games to help the women's squash team sweep the middle rotation en route to a 6-3 win over Virginia in Saturday's semifinals of the Kurtz Cup at Trinity's Kellner Squash Courts.
Cornell (7-10) rallied from a 2-0 deficit, starting with a victory from senior
Nghi Nguyen at No. 3 capped in a marathon fourth game, 18-16. While
Lily Zelov won her match at No. 2 in three, the Big Red turned its fortune on the other two courts. Virginia won its first two matches in five, then fell on the short end in five in the middle rotation. Gallagher came from a 2-1 deficit at No. 5, and Scherl outlasted her opponent in five at No. 8 to give Cornell a 4-2 lead.
The final points came from three-game victories via freshman Siva Subramaniam (No. 1) and junior
Madison Miles (No. 4). The victory avenged a loss to Virginia earlier this season.
Cornell, which won its last two Kurtz Cup appearances in 2007 and 2008, will attempt to make it three in a row in Sunday's All-Ivy League championship match. The Big Red will take on ninth-ranked Dartmouth at 11 a.m. at Kellner Squash Courts.
