ITHACA, N.Y. – Senior forward Mitch Vanderlaan and sophomore forward Morgan Barron each had a goal and an assist in the Cornell men's hockey team's 3-1 victory over St. Lawrence on Saturday night, and Yale's loss to Princeton also resulted in the Big Red clinching thr program's 23rd Ivy League championship.
 
The victory also helped Cornell (15-6-2, 11-3-2 ECAC Hockey) extend its lead in the ECAC Hockey standings to three points with six games remaining in the regular season. The Big Red has 24 points, which is three clear of Quinnipiac and four ahead of Harvard and Clarkson.
 
Cornell's power play continued its red-hot ways, producing goals in the opening 11 minutes by freshman forward Michael Regush and Barron. It gives Regush his fourth goal in the last six games, and his four strikes on the power play are the most for a Cornell freshman since current NHLer Riley Nash had seven during the 2007-08 season.
 
St. Lawrence (4-23-1, 2-13-1 ECAC Hockey) clawed back into the game with Andrew McIntyre's goal in the second period, but Vanderlaan's goal about five minutes later restored the hosts' two-goal cushion. Matthew Galajda made 20 saves to earn the victory.

At 7-1 with 15 points in Ancient Eight play, Cornell has been sitting in first place in Ivy League play since Nov. 2 — but it only secured its second straight outright Ivy League title after Princeton's 4-1 victory over Yale on Friday. The Big Red is 17-1-2 in its last 20 Ivy League contests

Cornell hits the road for four of its final six regular-season games, starting with an Ivy League road trip next weekend to Brown at 7 p.m. Friday and Yale at 7 p.m. Saturday.

Cornell's 1st Goal
1st period, 5:39  •  Regush 7 (Kaldis, Locke) (pp)  •  Cornell 1, St. Lawrence 0
• Vanderlaan's pass allowed Malott entry into the St. Lawrence zone on the left wing, then he set up the power play by zipping a pass to Kaldis coming in from the left point. He slipped the puck past a defender to move into the right circle and sent a shot on goal. Zetterquist made the save, but kicked the rebound into the slot. Regush got a stick to it to get it back in the crease undetected by Zetterquist, who ended up backing it into his own goal.
 
Cornell's 2nd Goal
1st period, 10:17  •  Barron 12 (Kaldis, Vanderlaan) (pp)  •  Cornell 2, St. Lawrence 0
• On the man advantage, Vanderlaan dug the puck out of the left corner and sent it back up to Kaldis at the point. He moved toward middle and saw that Barron was open in the right circle for a one-timer. Zetterquist got across to make the save with his trail leg, but the puck bounced off the defender draped on Tristan Mullin just above the crease and went in.
 
St. Lawrence's 1st Goal
2nd period, 11:21  •  McIntyre 4 (Suthers, McGeen) (pp)  •  Cornell 2, St. Lawrence 1
• At the tail end of a Saints power play, they worked the puck down the left side to the 6-foot-8 Suthers stationed off the post to Galajda's right. He jammed a puck on net that Galajda stopped, but McIntyre was crashing from the left circle and got to the rebound first. He didn't get all of his shot, but the puck hit off a defense and bounced into the wide side of the goal.

2nd period, 16:19  •  Vanderlaan 6 (Barron, Green)  •  Cornell 3, St. Lawrence 1
• The Saints cleared their zone and Kaldis collected at center ice and cut on his edges about four times to finally shake a forechecker and dish off to Green for a pass up the right wing. Barron gained the zone and dropped the puck off from Vanderlaan, who had a clear lane into the right circle and snapped a shot inside the far post past Zetterquist's blocker.
