RICHMOND, Va. – Junior
Seth Urbon surrendered just one run through the first five innings, but VCU put two on with no out in the sixth to chase Cornell's starter and eventually plate three runs en route to a 6-1 victory on Friday afternoon at The Diamond.
Cornell (0-4) scratched out its lone run in the seventh inning after senior
Will Simoneit led off with an infield single. A pair of wild pitches allowed Simoneit to reach third base, then he came plate-ward on a sacrifice fly by sophomore
Ramon Garza.
VCU (6-3), which was coming off a victory at sixth-ranked North Carolina on Wednesday that broke the Tarheels' 26-game winning streak at home, pushed across a run in the first inning to take an early lead. A base hit, a sacrifice bunt and another base hit put the Rams up 1-0 after one.
Urbon settled in from there, fanning six in five-plus innings of work. He stranded runners in scoring position in each of the next four frames before being removed in the sixth.
Simoneit's run in the top of the seventh brought the score back to 4-1, but the Rams padded their lead in the bottom half of the stanza. A leadoff double was followed by a run-scoring single to plate VCU's fifth run, then a sacrifice fly with runners on second and third allowed the final run to score.
Cornell and VCU resume the series at 2 p.m. Saturday at The Diamond.
