FAIRFAX, Va. -- Bekah Ansbro struck out a career-high 13 batters and George Mason scored in five straight innings to lead the Patriots to a 6-1 victory over Cornell on Friday afternoon in game one of the George Mason Invitational. The Big Red fell to 1-9 on the season, while the Patriots improved to 6-9.
The Big Red was limited to a pair of hits, but were able to scrape together a run in the first, with
Olivia Rooney plating a run with a single.
Hanna Crist also had a single for Cornell and
Erin Rockstroh scored once.
Katie Lew and
Ashley Delany both saw time in the circle, with Lew starting and giving up two earned runs over the first 3.1 innings of work.
Ansbro, who threw a no-hitter last weekend, scattered two hits and two walks while punching out 13 in a complete game win. The only run she surrendered was unearned.
Seven different George Mason hitters reached safely, with Amber Verstynen and Marissa Butts both going 2-for-3 in the win.
Cornell will play Saturday contests against Sacred Heart (11 a.m.) and East Carolina (3:45 p.m.) on day two of the tournament.
