FAIRFAX, Va. -- The Cornell softball team dropped a pair of games on day two of the George Mason Invitational, falling to Sacred Heart 4-2 before dropping an 11-1 contest in five innings to East Carolina. The Big Red fell to 1-11 on the season with the loss.
Game One
Bridget Rooney was 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles and drove in and scored a run, but Sacred Heart plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth to pull away for a 4-2 win over the Bgi Red in the days opener.
Cornell pitchers struck out a season high six and allowed just one walk, but the Pioneers took advantage of three Big Red errors and stole five bases to scrape together the win and improve to 10-8 on the season.
Ashley Delany went four innings, scattering six hits and two runs, while
Katie Lew went two frames and allowed three hits with three strikeouts.
Erin Rockstroh,
Allison Kerce and
Emily Muniz each had a hit, including the first of Muniz' career, with Rockstroh driving in a run. Â
Lindsey Spitz was 3-for-3 with a double to lead Sacred Hear's offense, while Amy Petrovich drove in a pair of runs. K McCann went the distance in the circle, allowing six hits and just one earned run over her seven innings of work.
Game Two
Freshman
Hanna Crist slammed her first career home run to spoil a shutout, but East Carolina pounded out 11 hits in an 11-1 win over Cornell in the nightcap of the George Mason Invitational.
The Pirates jumped out to a 10-0 lead before Crist's solo shot in the fourth inning, but Whitney Sanford made sure that was all the Big Red would get. The sophomore allowed just three hits and struck out five in the complete game, five-inning win. Pearson Yopp homered for ECU, while both Ashleigh Inae and Tate McClellan drove in three runs apiece.
Allison Kerce had a pair of hits for the Big Red in the loss.
Cornell closes out the George Mason Invitational with contests against the Pioneers (11 a.m.) and the Pirates (1:15 p.m.) on Sunday.
