Big Red Drops Sunday Contests To Close George Mason Invite

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 FAIRFAX, Va. -- Cornell closed out the 2019 George Mason Invitational with a pair of Sunday losses, falling to Sacred Heart 7-4 in game one before dropping a 10-0 contest to East Carolina in the nightcap. The Big Red fell to 1-12 on the season with the defeat.

Game One
Allison Kerce was 2-for-2 with a pair of doubles, a walk and an RBI to lead the Big Red offense. Cornell led 3-2 after five innings, but a Sacred Heart rally led the Pioneers to a sweep of the two games over the weekend.

A three-run sixth inning put the Pioneers into the lead, highlighted by a two-run double by Katelyn Christian. Sacred Heart added two more in the seventh after the Big Red got back within one to earn the victory.

Emily McKinney reached on a hit and a walk and Miranda Lawson had a double and an RBI, while both Rooney sisters, Olivia and Bridgette, drove in a run.

Ashley Delany allowed just two hits and a run over four innings in the circle, while Katie Lew went the final three, giving up five earned runs in taking the loss.

Game Two
A five-run fifth inning broke open a pitcher's duel and the Pirates completed the weekend by handing Cornell its fifth consecutive loss. Erin Poepping hurled a complete game three-hit shutout, while East Carolina pounded out 14 hits, including six for extra bases.

Lisa Nelson didn't allow a hit over the first three innings, but East Carolina broke out on top after a single, stolen base and run-scoring double handed the Pirates a 1-0 lead in the fourth. A pair of singles around a sacrifice bunt and an RBI double extended the lead to 3-0 in the fifth. By the time Rachel McCollum homered to center, it was 5-0 and ECU was rolling.

Erin Rockstroh, Emily McKinney and Bridgette Rooney each were credited with hits in the loss.

Cornell opens Ivy League play with a three-game home stand against Brown kicking off with a doubleheader on Saturday, March 23 at 12:30 p.m. at Niemand-Robison Field.
