TOWSON, Md. – Junior
Matt Collins had a pair of hits and the baseball team had the go-ahead run on first base with no out in the ninth inning, but it ultimately came up short in a 3-2 loss to Towson on Sunday at Schuerholz Park.
Cornell (3-9) got five innings with just one unearned run scored against junior starter
Seth Urbon, who departed the game in the middle of the sixth inning with the score tied at 1. A run-scoring double gave Towson (4-11) the lead, then the Tigers manufactured another run in the seventh off an infield single, a stolen base, and advancement on a groundout, then a wild pitch.
Towson took that 3-1 lead all the way into the ninth when Cornell staged a comeback attempt. Collins led off by getting hit by a pitch, then junior
Alex Carnegie pulled a single into left to put two on with no out. Senior
Will Simoneit then delivered with a pinch-hit single to center, scoring Collins to cut the deficit to 3-2.
But Towson held on, inducing a double-play grounder and a fly ball to left with the potential tying run on third base.
Cornell returns to action March 23-24 at Columbia in the teams' Ivy League opener.
