Women's Tennis Returns Home To Face Stony Brook, Niagara

ITHACA, N.Y. — The women's tennis team returns to Reis Tennis Center for a five-match home stand, starting with a non-league doubleheader Saturday. Cornell opens against Stony Brook at 10 a.m. before taking on Niagara at 2:30 p.m.

Cornell (3-8) is coming off a pair of road losses last weekend in the Midwest. It started with a 7-0 loss Saturday at Indiana and concluded with a 5-2 setback the following morning at Xavier. Freshmen Valerie Ho (No. 4) and Sarah Campbell (No. 5) accounted for the Big Red points with singles victories against the Musketeers. The duo remains tied for the team lead in singles victories with five apiece. Freshman Maria Adiaconitei and sophomore Ana Elhom are 3-2 from No. 3 doubles.

Stony Brook (6-1) has won five straight matches, including a three-match sweep last weekend in Connecticut. The Sea Wolves started with a 4-3 victory Friday at UConn, highlighted by three-set singles victories from Jamie Wei (No. 1) and Sasha Bekirova (No. 4). Wei, a freshman, also won the following days at Fairfield and Sacred Heart to earn Missouri Valley Conference Singles Player of the Week honors.

Cornell is a perfect 6-0 all-time against the Seawolves — with those victories coming in 2001, 2006, 2007, 2010, 2016 and 2017. The Big Red swept the last meeting, 7-0.

Niagara (2-8, 0-1 MAAC) split its matches last weekend, defeating Division II Le Moyne on Friday, 6-1, before suffering a 6-1 loss to Wright State at home on Sunday. Chhinda Som and Megan Gamble have won three straight in No. 1 doubles, and Som is 3-6 from the top spot in singles. Olga Donchu has the team's best singles record with a 5-5 mark from the middle of the order. The Big Red has recorded a 7-0 sweep in each of its two previous meetings with the Purple Eagles in 2016 and 2017.

Both of Saturday's matches are open to the public and free to attend.
