CAMBRIDGE – Harvard shot nearly 50 percent for the game and forced the Big Red women's basketball team into 16 first half turnovers as it jumped out to an insurmountable halftime lead and never looked back in front of a large, raucous crowd this evening at Levietes Pavilion. With the 80-38 victory, the Crimson improves to 15-11 overall (8-5 Ivy), giving head coach Kathy Delaney-Smith the 600th win of her career, and securing a spot in the Ivy League Women's Basketball Tournament.
The Big Red's playoff hopes are still alive thanks to Penn's victory over Yale this evening in New Haven.
Cornell (11-13, 5-8 Ivy) was led by Laura Bagwell-Katalinch's 10 points and six rebounds, while freshman
Samantha Will finished with a career-high eight points.
Harvard had five players finish in double-digits with Katie Benzen scoring a game-high 17 points.
The home team dominated all aspects of the game, shooting 46 percent overall (33-71), and 34 percent from beyond the arc (10-of-29). Harvard also held the 46-34 edge in rebounds and finished with 10 fewer turnovers (19-9). Cornell shot just 27 percent overall (15-55) and a mere 11 percent form 3-point range (1-9).
The Big Red will play its final regular season game when it travels to Hanover to take on Dartmouth at 5 p.m. on Saturday March 9. Cornell needs to defeat the Big Green, coupled with a victory by Princeton over Yale, to secure a spot in the Ivy League Tournament.
