WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Sophomore
Ramon Garza hit a run-scoring double to stake the Cornell baseball team to an early lead on Monday, but Yale stormed ahead with a five-run fifth inning to power a 7-2 victory over the Big Red at Yale Field.
Sophomore
Nicholas Binnie had the first three-hit game of the season for Cornell (5-13, 2-4 Ivy League), which is just two games out of first place in the Ivy standings despite opening the season with road series against the defending co-champions from last year, Yale (10-13, 4-2) and Columbia.
The Big Red got off to a good start in the rubber game of the series by plating a run in the first inning. Senior
Adam Saks led off with a double, then an infield hit by
Will Simoneit put runners on the corners with one out. Garza followed with a double down the line in left to score Saks, while Simoneit was held up at third. Yale starter Kumar Nambiar got the final two outs to strand the two runners in scoring position and minimize the damage.
While the Bulldogs led off the bottom of the first with an infield single, Cornell junior starter
Seth Urbon set the next eight batters down in order. He stranded a pair of runners with his fourth and final strikeout of the day to end the third inning, then worked around a leadoff double in the fourth.
Yale finally broke through in the fifth. A leadoff walk was followed by a pair of bunt base hits, the second of which also led to a throwing error and two runners to score. A base hit up the middle brought home the third run, then Brian Ronai's two-run home run to left-center with two out stretch the hosts' lead to 5-1.
After the Bulldogs tacked on a pair of runs in the sixth, Cornell threatened to get back into the game in the seventh. Junior
Alex Carnegie's third walk of the day led off the frame, then Binnie served a single into center. Flematti eventually drove in Carnegie from third with a sacrifice fly, but the Big Red couldn't threaten further.
Cornell continues a busy stretch of three games in three days with its home opener at 3 p.m. Tuesday, when it takes on St. Bonaventure in a non-league game at Hoy Field in Ithaca, New York.
