NEW YORK, N.Y. -- Conference-leading Columbia held its spot at the top of the standings with a pair of wins over Cornell on Saturday afternoon in Ivy League softball action. The Lions improved to 16-15 (8-3 Ivy) with 12-0 and 12-4 wins in five and six innings, respectively. The Big Red slipped to 6-27 (2-9 Ivy) with the losses.
Game 1
Columbia scored six times in the second and five more in the third en route to a 12-0, five-inning win in game one. The Lions had just eight hits, but took advantage of six walks and a pair of Big Red errors in the win.
Cornell scratched out four hits against starter Madison Canby, who hurled the complete game shutout for the Lions.
Bridgette Rooney doubles and
Allison Kerce,
Emily McKinney and
Olivia Rooney also had hits.
Sommer Grzybek was 2-for-3 with a home run and four RBI, while Max Ortega went 2-for-3 with three RBI and a pair of ruins scored in the win for the Lions.
Game 2
Cornell pounded out four doubles and used a four-run fourth inning to make it a 6-4 game, but the Lions poured it on late in capturing a 12-4 win in six innings in the nightcap.
Miranda Lawson and Allson Kerce were each 2-for-4 with a doubles, with Kerce driving in two and Lawson scoring once and driving in another.
Hanna Crist and
Brianna Straley also had doubles in the loss.
Katie Lew went the distance in the circle for Cornell, allowing 11 hits and issuing 10 walks in taking the loss.
Madison Camby picked up the win in relief, shutting Cornell down over the final 2.2 innings after allowing just two hits and no runs. Max Ortega was 2-for-3 with four RBI, Sommer Grzybek went 2-for-3 with two walks and two RBI and A Stuart was 2-for-4 with a homer and three RBI.
The two teams will meet in a third game on Sunday, April 14 at 12:00 p.m. (change from 12:30 p.m.).
