ITHACA, N.Y. – In a back-and-forth game that saw six ties, the No. 10 Big Red men's lacrosse team pulled away early in the fourth quarter, and then held off a late rally by No. 12 Notre Dame to pick up a huge road win over the Irish, 11-9, at Arlotta Stadium. With the win, Cornell improves to 8-4 overall, while Notre Dame slips to 6-5.
In its first trip to South Bend since the 1991 season, the Big Red received an outstanding performance from freshman goalie
Chayse Ierlan, who matched a career-high with 17 saves, despite playing in torrential rain, and periods of sleet.
Clarke Petterson and
Cooper Telesco scored three goals apiece to lead the offense. The three scores moved Petteson into ninth place in Cornell history for career goals, while Telesco's three goals were a career-high.
Jeff Teat (two goals, one assist) and
Jake McCulloch (one goal, two assists) registered three points apiece, and
Jonathan Donville scored twice to round out the Big Red's multi-point scorers.
In front of Ierlan, the Big Red defense forced eight of Notre Dame's 18 turnovers, with
Fleet Wallace and
Brandon Salvatore registering two apiece. Wallace also picked up a team-high five ground balls, while Salvatore scooped up four.
Notre Dame received three goals from Bryan Costabile, while Brian Willetts chipped in two goals and one assist.
The Irish held the substantial advantage in shots (49-34), but Cornell had a much better shot selection with UND holding a slim 26-23 edge in shots on goal. The home team dominated the face-off circle, winning 20-of-23, which led to a 36-19 advantage in ground balls.
Both teams cleared the ball well, despite the challenging weather conditions, with Cornell going 17-of-21 and the Irish clearing 10-of-13.
Notre Dame also went 2-of-5 on its man-up chances and held Cornell scoreless on its only opportunity.
The teams stayed within one goal of each other until a score by Telesco at the 2:29 mark of the third quarter opened up a five-goal scoring run that turned a 6-5 Notre Dame lead into a 10-6 Cornell advantage with 6:07 to play in the game.
Connor Morin ended a 14:48 scoreless drought for the Irish and the home team scored twice more in quick succession to make it a one-goal game (10-9) with 4:21 showing on the clock.
Notre Dame won the restart, but Salvatore caused a turnover and after an extended possession, Donville got underneath his man as he streaked to the goal and scored on the doorstep to make it an 11-9 contests with 2:52 to play.
The Irish drew a penalty on the ensuing face-off but Ierlan made a save to kill the penalty, and then made two more stops down the stretch before the Big Red got the ball into the offensive end and ran out the clock.
Cornell returns to Ivy League play and wraps up a four-game road trip when it travels to Brown for a noon game on Saturday, April 20.
