Softball Drops Rubber Game To Dartmouth, 7-3

ITHACA, N.Y. -- Cornell put the tying run on base in the seventh inning after falling behind 7-1, but Dartmouth held on for a 7-3 win on Sunday afternoon at Niemand-Robison Field to claim the series victory over the Big Red (7-30, 3-12 Ivy). The Big Green improved to 8-24 (5-10 Ivy) with two conference weekends remaining.

Heather Turner picked up her second win of the weekend, going 6.2 innings and scattering eight hits and all three runs. Cornell loaded the bases on her in the final inning, but Brooke Plonka was able to get out of the jam for her first collegiate save. Both Abby Shipley and McKenna Gray homered for Dartmouth in the victory.

Miranda Lawson led the Cornell offense by going 3-for-4 with a double and a run scored, while five other Big Red players had a hit apiece. Allison Kerce, Emily McKinney and Bridgette Rooney all drove in runs for the home team. Three Big Red pitchers saw time in the circle, with Lisa Nelson starting and limiting the Big Green to one run and four hits over 2.2 innings of work.

The game was 1-1 after three, with Cornell scoring the tying run in the third on an RBI single up the middle by Bridgette Rooney. The Big Green took advantage of three consecutive walks to begin the fourth to score four times and break open the game, adding single runs in the fifth and seventh before the Big Red mounted a bit of a rally. A walk and consecutive hits brought in a run, and a sacrifice fly made it 7-3 with one out. A walk and a hit batsmen loaded the bases for Cornell, but a grounder to second couldn't make it through the infield and the Big Green retired the inning to pick up the victory.

The Big Red will visit Division III crosstown rival Ithaca College on Tuesday, April 23 at 3:30 p.m. before returning home for its home finale, a three-game set with Princeton on Senior Weekend. Cornell will play the Tigers in a doubleheader on Saturday, April 27 at 12:30 p.m., then will honor senior Olivia Lam prior to Sunday's 12:30 p.m. first pitch.
