Lew Propels Softball To Split At Mount St. Mary's

EMMITSBURG, Md. -- The Cornell softball team posted its second doubleheader split in as many days in Maryland, topping Mount St. Mary's 7-4 in game one before suffering a 9-1 loss in game two on Wednesday afternoon at Our Lady of the Meadows Field. The Big Red is now 5-21, while the Mountaineers are 14-19.

Game One
Katie Lew picked up her third win of the season, scattering eight hits and striking out a career-high eight in a 7-4 win over the Mountaineers.

Erin Rockstroh's three-run double in the third broke open what had been a 1-0 Mount St. Mary's lead. She ended the afternoon 2-for-4 with a stolen base. Olivia Rooney added a pair of hits and Hanna Crist added a pair of RBI as the Big Red scratched together its seven runs on seven hits.

Cornell plated a pair of unearned runs in the fourth, taking advantage of a pair of singles, an error and a sacrifice fly on a foul-out to add to its lead.

The home team got back in the game with two in the fourth and another in the sixth, but Lew got out of a two-on, no-out jam in the seventh to earn her second win in as many days.

Game Two
Emily McKinney slammed her second home run of the season and freshmen accounted for all four hits, but Mount St. Mary's scored two in the first and never surrendered the lead in a 9-1, five-inning victory in the nightcap.

Amanda Berkley hurled a four-hit complete game, allowing just the McKinney homer to lead off the second inning. She struck out three without issuing a walk. Morgan Alisauckas was 2-for-4 with a double and twp RBI and Erin Sweeney had a pair of doubles and also drove in two.

Cornell returns to action when Penn comes to town for a three-game series beginning on Saturday, April 6 at 12:30 p.m. at Niemand*Robison Field.
