ITHACA, N.Y. -- Penn's bats gave the visitors early leads in both games and the Quaker pitching silenced Cornell's bats over the final eight innings of the day in picking up 12-7 and 8-0 wins over the Big Red on Saturday afternoon at Niemand*Robison Field. Penn improved to 16-11 (7-4 Ivy), while Cornell fell to 5-23 (2-6 Ivy) with the losses.
Game One
Penn jumped out to a 10-2 lead, but Cornell chipped away to get within four runs after four, but Penn reliever Julia Longo shut the door on a potential rally in a 12-7 Quaker victory.
Bridgette Rooney was 2-for-3 with a walk and three runs scored,
Allison Kerce added a pair of hits, including a triple, and
Emily McKinney homered a drove in four to lead the Cornell offense.
Ashley Delany gave up four hits and one run over the final four innings in the circle to keep the Big Red in the game.
Longo came out of the bullpen to scatter three hits in 3.1 scoreless innings, striking out six. Five different Penn players had multi-hit games, with Lucy Yang going 2-for-5 with a home run and two RBI and Hannah Gibbons hitting a pair of doubles. Kayla Ketring was 2-for-2 with two walks and four RBI in the win.
Penn scored six in the first, and though Cornell answered with two while leaving the bases loaded in the bottom half of the inning, the Quakers were firmly in control. Three more runs by Penn pushed the lead to 9-2, and though Cornell scratched back to 11-7, Longo closed out her fourth win of the year.
Game Two
Jennifer Brann went the distance, allowing three hits and striking out five in a complete game 8-0 shutout of the Big Red in five innings.
Emma Nedley was 3-for-4 with a double, a home run and three RBI to lead the Quakers. She ended the afternoon with three of Penn's seven hits in the win.
Allison Kerce,
Emily McKinney and
Olivia Rooney each had singles for the Big Red.
Ashley Delany allowed just two hits and one earned run over the final three innings for the Big Red in the circle.
Penn scored three in the first and wasn't threatened, as Brann set the tone by retiring Cornell in order in each of the first two innings. Three more in the third set the visitors up to win a shortened game, and single runs in the fourth and fifth closed out the doubleheader sweep.
The two teams will close out the three-game series on Sunday, April 7 at 12:30 p.m. for a single game at Niemand*Robison Field.
