No. 12 Men's Lacrosse Rolls Over Harvard, 19-11

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – With the game tied at 3-3 late in the first quarter, the No. 12 Big Red men's lacrosse team scored four unanswered, including the 99th and 100th goals of Clarke Petterson's career, and never looked back as it rolled Harvard, 19-11, this afternoon at Harvard Stadium. With the win, Cornell improved to 7-3 overall and 2-2 in Ivy League play, while the Crimson slip to 5-5 on the season and 1-2 in conference.

Cornell eventually built an 8-4 halftime lead and was able to score 11 second half goals thanks to an outstanding performance in the face-off circle, as the Big Red won 10-of-19 restarts in final 30 minutes.

Jeff Teat led all scorers with an eight-point game with five goals and three assists. In his three meetings with Harvard, Teat has amassed 12 goals and 13 assists to average 8.3 points per contest against the Crimson.

Petterson finished the day with five goals and two assists and moved into 10th place in Cornell history with 104 career goals, just two shy of current Big Red assist coach Connor Buczek '15, who sits in ninth place with 106 career tallies.

Massachusetts native John Piatelli was also impressive with two goals and a team-high four helpers, while midfielders Jake McCulloch (two goals, one assist), Matt Licciardi (one goal, two assists), Zach Ward (two goals) and Jonathan Donville (two assists) all had multipoint games.

The Big Red offense was outstanding, as it assisted on 15-of-19 goals, and put 32 of it 48 shots on goal.

Defensively, Cornell was just as impressive, causing 16 of the Crimson's 17 turnovers on the day, while forcing Harvard into four failed clears (15-of-19). Joseph Bartolotto III and Fleet Wallace caused three turnovers apiece, while Dom Doria, Brandon Salvatore, Ryan Bray, and Piatelli forced two apiece. Salvatore also matched Paul Rasimowicz with four ground balls.

Rasimowicz won 9-of-21 face-offs, including a 5-of-8 performance in the third quarter as the Big Red put the game out of reach.

Harvard was kept in the game early by goalie Kyle Mullins' 13 saves, but the top netminder in the Ivy League didn't post a save in the final quarter, allowing six goals in the final 15 minutes. Cornell freshman goalie Chayse Ierlan, on the other hand, posted 14 saves, including five in the final stanza, before giving way to Caelahn Bullen, who stopped one shot and didn't allow a goal.

Kyle Massimilian gave the Crimson plenty of possessions, including the first 12 of the contest, but Cornell used tenacious defense and timely saves to take a 7-4 lead before winning its first face-off of the game with 4:55 remaining in the second quarter. Massimilian went 19-of-27 in the game and picked up a game-high nine ground balls.

Kyle Anderson and Myles Hamm both finished with three goals and one assist for the Crimson.

Cornell held the edge in shots (48-42), and shots on goal (32-25), but Harvard finished with more ground balls (45-30). Both teams scored a man-up goal, with Cornell going 1-of-3 and the Crimson going 1-of-5.

After trading goals to 3-3, Petterson's 99th career goal opened up a 4-0 scoring run that handed the Big Red a 7-3 lead midway through the second quarter. Hamm ended Cornell's scoring streak, but Teat tallied a goal in transition with just 23 seconds to play in the second quarter and the Big Red took an 8-4 lead into the half.

Once again, the teams traded goals to start the third quarter, but three unanswered Big Red tallies in a span of 1:10 pushed Cornell's lead to 12-5.

Harvard responded with its first back-to-back goals of the game to cut the lead to five goals (12-7), but Cornell scored seven of the next eight in the contest to go up by double digits, 19-8.

Coach Milliman went to his bench late in the fourth and the Crimson scored three times in the final three minutes, including a man-up tally, to account for the 19-11 final.

The Big Red is back in action when it heads to No. 13 Syracuse to take on the Orange in the Carrier Dome at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, April, 9. The game will be nationally broadcast on ESPNU.
