Women's Lacrosse Tops Yale, 18-12

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Cornell women's lacrosse team had eight different players find the back of the net against Yale Saturday at Reese Stadium. This marks the third consecutive game that at least seven different players score a goal.
 
Leading the way for the Big Red (7-4, 3-1 Ivy League) was junior captain Caroline Allen, who registered four goals and added an assist. The Ardmore, Pennsylvania, native now has 99 career points. Additionally, Ellie Walsh and Grace Paletta each had hat tricks. All three of Walsh's goals came in the first half.
 
Walsh opened the scoring with an unassisted goal just over two and half minutes into the contest. Walsh's goal ignited a Cornell 3-0 run. Tomasina Leska and Caroline Allen each found the back of the net before Yale's Olivia Penoyer got the Bulldogs (4-6, 0-4 Ivy League) on the board with 21:40 left in the opening frame.
 
Just one minute later, Walsh netted her second goal of the contest to put the Big Red back ahead three. The goal once again was the first of a 3-0 spurt for the Big Red. Shannon Brazier added her sixth tally of the year with 19:00 left. Just a minute later Shannon Bertscha netted her eight goal of the year to make the score 6-1.
 
The Bulldogs responded with a goal from Sam Higgins, before Allen netted her second of the afternoon to make the score 7-2. Yale then fought back shorten its deficit to three goals with two consecutive tallies.
 
The scoring then went back and forth to close out the half with Paletta netting the next goal before Penoyer cut the Big Red's lead back to three.The Big Red pushed its lead back to five with goals from Genevieve DeWinter and Sarah Phillips.
 
Penoyer netted her fourth of the contest with just over a minute left to make the score 10-6. Though it would not be the last tally of the first half as Walsh completed the hat trick with 14 seconds remaining to tie her career high and give the Big Red the 11-6 advantage heading into the break.
 
In the second half, Leska was the first to find the back of the net with a free position goal with 26:22 remaining in the contest.
 
The teams then treaded goals with Yale's Izzy Nixon and finding the back of the net followed by DeWinter's second goal of the contest. The Bulldog then started a second half surge, going on a 4-0 run to narrow the Big Red's lead to 13-11.
 
Cornell responded with three consecutive goals with one coming from Paletta and the other two off the stick of Allen to put the Big Red back up five.
 
Yale's Jill Gollob netted a goal with 11:04 left, but the Big Red added two more tallies before the end of the game.
 
The Big Red returns home when it hosts Brown at 1 p.m. next Saturday.
 

NOTES TO KNOW

  • With the win the Big Red has matched its season win-total from last season in addition to surpassing its conference win-total.
  • The Big Red extended its win-streak over Yale to 12 games.  
  • This marks two consecutive games that Paletta has tied her career high with three goals. The sophomore now has registered multiple goals in seven games.
  • Bertscha registered a new career high with three points. The senior attacker also tied her career high with two goals.
