Early Runs Power Binghamton Past Baseball, 8-4

ITHACA, N.Y. – Sophomore Ramon Garza was 2-for-4 with a pair of stolen bases and an RBI, but the baseball team couldn't dig out of an early hole in an 8-4 loss to Binghamton on Tuesday afternoon at sunny Hoy Field.

Binghamton (13-12) pounced for five hits in the top of the first inning, plating three runs. Alex Baratta drove a two-run double into the gap in left-center, then he scored on a base hit by Sean Trenholm.

Cornell (7-17) clawed back with two runs, aided by drawing four walks. The first free pass came from sophomore Nicholas Binnie to lead off, then he scored from second on a double by freshman Austin Flematti that kissed third base on its way down the line. Senior Josh Arndt later earned a two-out walk with the bases loaded to plate Flematti.

But the Bearcats countered immediately with four runs in the third, two of which were unearned after a fielding error that but two on with no outs.

After swift and uneventful middle innings, Binghamton scored its final run on a safety squeeze from Justin Drpich with runners on the corners and one out in the seventh.

Cornell hit the ball hard just after the stretch, but it was unlucky to find a couple Binghamton gloves in the process. Senior Adam Saks' base hit up the box led off, then he moved to second on a wild pitch. Arndt laced a line drive right at the center fielder, then senior Will Simoneit pulled a screamer directly at the third baseman. Garza finally drove in Saks with a flare inside the line in left.

The Big Red returns to Ivy League play when it travels to Harvard this weekend. The series is scheduled to start with a doubleheader at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, then wrap up with a single game at noon Sunday. All of the games at Harvard are scheduled to be broadcast on ESPN+.
