Men’s Swimming and Diving Adds Nine to 2019-20 Roster

ITHACA, N.Y. – Wes Newman, the Phillip H. Bartels '71 Head Coach of Men's Swimming, has announced the addition of nine student-athletes to the 2019-20 men's swimming and diving roster.
 
Freshmen Jacob Bass, Jack Casey, Paige daCosta, Noah Kanan, Chris Kostelni, Alan Li, Jeremy Marcin, Ryan Pirrung, and Jack Valiquette will join a Big Red squad that finished with a 4-5 overall record in 2018-19 and defeated Ivy League foe Yale for the first time since the 2011-12 campaign.
 
Cornell's schedule for the upcoming season will be announced in the coming weeks.

Incoming Student-Athlete Biographies

Jacob Bass
Kingwood, Texas / Kingwood HS / Breast/IM

Prior to Cornell
- Four year member of the swim team at Kingwood HS where is was named a co-captain in 2018-19.
- School record holder in the 100 breaststroke and 200 medley relay.
- 2019 6A State Bronze Medalist in the 100 breaststroke and 200 IM.
- Two-time State Silver Medalist in the 200 medley relay (2018 and 2019).
- Four-time selection to the All-State Team.
- Competed on the club scene for Blue Tide Aquatics where he was a National team member, Junior National Qualifier, and US Open Qualifier.

Jack Casey
Hauppauge N.Y. / Hauppauge HS / Breast
Prior to Cornell
- Swam his way to All-State, All-County, and All-Long Island honors in 2016, 2017, and 2018.
- Named an NISCA All-American in 2017 and 2018.
- Competed on the club circuit for Team Suffolk where he was a USA Swimming Scholastic All-American in 2016, 2017, and 2018.

Paige daCosta
Livermore, Calif. / Granada HS / IM/Back

Prior to Cornell
- Four-year letterman and three-time state qualifier at Granada HS.
- Finished third in the 200 IM at the 2019 California State Championships.
- Placed sixth in the 100 back at the 2019 State Championships.
- Named a Scholastic All-American in 2016 and 2017.
- Competed on the club circuit for the Pleasanton Seahawks.

Noah Kanan
Yorba Linda, Calif. / Esperanza HS / Dive

Prior to Cornell
- Four-year member of the swim and dive team at Esperanza HS.
- Three-time All-American and two-time state qualifier.
- Competed on the club circuit for the Mission Viejo Natadores where he was a 10-time National qualifier.

Chris Kostelni
Williamsburg, Va. / Lafayette HS / Free

Prior to Cornell
- Four year letterman at Lafayette HS where he was elected team captain for the 2018-19 season.
- 2019 State Champion and state record holder in the 500 free, 200 medley relay, and 400 free relay.
- 2019 State Runner-Up in the 200 free.
- Named a Scholastic All-American in 2018 and 2019.
- Deemed the Daily Press Swimmer of the Year in 2019.
- Named the Virginia Gazette Swimmer of the Year in 2017.
- Swam on the club circuit for Williamsburg Aquatic Club where he was a four-time Most Valuable Swimmer.

Alan Li
Potomac, Md. / Montgomery Blair HS / Fly/Back

Prior to Cornell
- Runner-up in the 100 fly and 100 back at the MPSSAA State Championship.
- Runner-up in the 100 fly at the Washington Metro Championships.
- Competed on the club circuit for All Star Aquatics where he was a NCSA Junior Nationals finalist.
- Also named a USA Swimming Scholastic All-American.

Jeremy Marcin
Simi Valley, Calif. / Westlake HS / Fly

Prior to Cornell
- Four-year letterman at Westlake HS where was elected team captain as a senior.
- Holds Westlake's school record in the 100 fly and was named the team's MVP in 2018 and 2019.
- Four-time CIF-SS qualifier, three-time state qualifier, and two-time NISCA All-American.
- Also a two-time USA Swimming Scholastic All-American.
- Named Ventura County's Swimmer of the Year in 2019.
- Competed on the club circuit for Conejo Simi Swim Club where he holds club records in the 50 free, 50 fly, and 100 fly.
- Two-time Junior National Qualifier.

Ryan Pirrung
Newark, Del. / Conrad Schools of Science / Breast/IM

Prior to Cornell
- Four year letterman at Conrad Schools of Science where he was elected team captain as a senior.
- Named to the USA Swimming Scholastic All-American Team in 2017-18.
- Earned the title of Delaware High School Men's Swimmer of the Year in 2019.
- State Champion in the 100 breaststroke, 200 freestyle, and 400 freestyle relay as a junior.
- State Runner-up in the 100 breaststroke, 200 IM, and 200 medley relay as a sophomore.
- Two-time First-Team All-State selection.
- Swam on the club circuit for the Delaware Swim Team.
- US Senior National Qualifier in the 200 breaststroke.
- US Junior National Qualifier in three additional events.
- Holds the club record for the men's 15-18 200 IM, as well as several Conrad Schools of Science school records.

Jack Valiquette
Charlotte, N.C. / Ardrey Kell HS / Breast/IM

Prior to Cornell
- Four-year letterman at Ardrey Kell HS where he was elected team captain in 2019.
- Three-time USA Swimming Scholastic All-American.
- US Open Qualifier.
- Swam on the club circuit for SwimMac Carolina.
