Men's Soccer Returns Home for Opener Against Fairleigh Dickinson

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Cornell men's soccer team looks to continue its momentum following a 2-1 overtime victory over then No. 16-ranked Michigan State last weekend, with matches against Fairleigh Dickinson on Saturday, Sept. 14 and Syracuse on Tuesday, Sept. 17. Fairleigh Dickinson received a vote in the latest United Soccer Coaches poll following a win over UConn and is the No. 2-ranked team in the Northeast Region.

SERIES HISTORY AGAINST FAIRLEIGH DICKINSON
Cornell leads the all-time series against Fairleigh Dickinson, 6-0, and are 3-0 when facing the Knights in Ithaca. The Big Red won the last meeting, 2-0, on Sept. 21, 2014. Cornell is 2-0 all-time against the Knights on the road and 1-0 when playing at a neutral site. The Big Red is 1-0 all-time in overtime games against Fairleigh Dickinson. Cornell and Fairleigh Dickinson played one another often in the 90's, playing four times from 1995-1999. The series dates back to the 1995 season, a 4-2 victory for the Big Red in Ithaca.

ABOUT THE KNIGHTS
Fairleigh Dickinson is 3-1 through its first four games with wins over Bucknell (2-1), then No. 23-ranked UCONN (2-1) and Gonzaga (3-1). The Knights lone loss thus far came against Lafayette by a final tally of 1-0. Fairleigh Dickinson enters Saturday's match as the No. 2-ranked team in the Northeast Region, up from No. 7 last week and behind New Hampshire. 

Junior forward Diego Arribas is one of the top scorers in the country this season with three goals already in 2019. Arribas has scored in each of FDU's wins in 2019 and ranks No. 23 in Division I in goals scored. Five different Knights have found the back of the net in 2019 wih Adrian Barajas, Ideal Shefqeti, Joshua Ferreira and Jared Dillon each scoring once so far.

Jahmali Waite is the team's leading goalkeeper with a .765 save percentage and a 1.00 goals against average. Waite has made 28 career starts for the Knights in his career and owns a 10-9-3 record in those appearances.

SERIES HISTORY AGAINST SYRACUSE
In a series that dates back to 1921, Cornell leads the all-time series against Syracuse, 35-27-7. The Big Red were defeated in the last meeting between the two sides, a 2-0 loss in Ithaca last season on Sept. 10. Cornell's last victory over the Orange came on Sept. 19, 2017, a 1-0 upset over then No. 11-Syracuse in overtime. On the road, Cornell holds an 11-8-1 record since playing location started being tracked.

ABOUT THE ORANGE
Syracuse is 1-1-2 through its first four matches, with a 3-1 win over Binghamton being its lone victory of the year to date. The Orange were defeated by Georgetown in the season opener and have tied in each of the last two matches, a 1-1 tie against Yale and a 2-2 tie against New Hampshire.

Sophomore midfielder Ryan Raposo has been on a tear to open the season, with four goals and two assists in the teams first four matches. Raposo ranks No. 8 nationally in goals (4) and No. 7 nationally in points (10). Simon Triantafillou is second on the team in scoring with two goals and one assist.

Jake Leahy and Christian Miesch have shared the goalkeeping duties for Syracuse this season with each making a pair of starts between the posts. Leahy is 1-0-1 in his matches with a 1.35 goals against average and a .400 save percentage. Miesch is 0-1-1 with a .556 save percentage, but a 1.80 goals against mark.

Citron Named Ivy League Rookie of the Week
First Year Will Citron was named the Ivy League Rookie of the Week for Sept. 8 following a week in which he scored the game-winning goal against then No. 16-ranked Michigan State in overtime. Citron didn't play major minutes in the 2-1 overtime victory, but came through in the clutch for Cornell in the 96th minute.

Sophomore Emeka Eneli is the last member of the program to earn the honor, winning it twice during the 2018 season.

Cornell Moves Up in Regional Rankings
Cornell men's soccer moved up from No. 10 to No. 3 in the United Soccer Coaches Northeast Region rankings this week following a loss against Michigan and a win over Michigan State. Fairleigh Dickinson is the No. 2 team in the region, which bodes well for an exciting matchup on Saturday. New Hampshire is the No. 1-ranked team in the region following a 2-0-2 start that featured wins over Boston (1-0) and Providence (2-1), alongside ties against Colgate  (0-0) and Syracuse (2-2).

Last Time Out
In a game that needed extra time to determine the victor, Cornell defeated No. 16-ranked Michigan State by a final score of 2-1 (OT), in East Lansing, Mich. on Sept. 8. First year Will Citron scored the game-winning goal for the Big Red, finding the back of the net in the 96th minute to defeat the Spartans. It's Cornell's first win over a ranked opponent since 9/19/2017, a 1-0 overtime victory over No. 11-ranked Syracuse.

Cornell out-shot the Spartans by a 19-6 margin overall, and led in shots on goal, 8-4. Michigan State (0-2-2) held an advantage in corner kicks attempted with 10, while the Big Red attempted six. Making his first start of the season, senior goalkeeper Ryan Shellow made three saves.
