Men’s Soccer Outlasted by Syracuse in Overtime

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Despite two first-half goals on Tuesday night, the Cornell men's soccer team was upended by Syracuse in overtime, by a final score of 3-2. Following a scoreless second half of action it was Syracuse's Noah Singelmann that hit pay dirt in the 96th minute to provide victory for the Orange.

Cornell (2-2) had more chances on goal Tuesday, placing five shots on net to four for Syracuse (2-1-3). The Big Red also saw an advantage in total shots, leading the Orange 13-8 overall and 8-3 in a scoreless second half.

Much like Cornell's match against Fairleigh Dickinson on Saturday, Sept. 14, the Big Red got things started on offense early in the contest, scoring in the second minute of action to take a 1-0 lead over the Orange. Junior Harry Fuller sent a cross into the box, allowing senior George Pedlow to find the back of the net for his first goal of the year.

Syracuse was quick to answer however, tying the match up at 1-1 less than two minutes later. Following a foul on the Big Red, Massimo Ferrin took a free kick that found its way into the back of the net to even the score.

Cornell continued its strong first half offensively in the 19th minute when senior Ryan Bayne gave the Big Red a 2-1 advantage. Fuller was on the distributing end of a free kick once again, this time deflecting his kick off a Syracuse defender inside the box before the ball found Bayne's foot.

After a scoreless junior season, Bayne's goal is his first since he scored the game-winning overtime goal in a 4-3 victory over Colgate on Oct. 10, 2017.

A back and forth first half was bookended by a fourth goal when Syracuse tied things up in the 34th minute. Ryan Raposo took a free kick that found the head Simon Triantafillou before being put on goal by Severin Soerlie.

The Big Red had a number of chances in the second half, but were unable to find the game-winner. Out-shooting Syracuse in the second stanza, 8-3, Cornell had seven shots in the final 22 minutes of action. Senior John Scearce and Pedlow combined for three straight shots in the 68th and 69th minutes, with two of Scearce's shots being blocked and sent out for corner kicks. A shot by junior Charles Touche in the 88th minute was saved by Orange goalkeeper Christian Miesch.

Playing in its second overtime game of the season, Cornell had the first crack at a game-winner in the 92nd minute, but first year midfielder Brandon Morales' shot was saved. Following a Pedlow shot that went wide of goal, Singelmann worked his way around the Big Red defense after the restart and slotted home the final goal of the evening.

UP NEXT: Cornell remains on the road this weekend, facing Canisius at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 21. The Golden Griffins enter Saturday's match with a 1-4 overall record after a 3-0 loss to St. Bonaventure on Tuesday night in Olean, N.Y. Following Saturday's match, the Big Red will have played four of its first five matches on the road. Cornell returns home to Charles F. Berman Field on Tuesday, Sept. 24 for a 7 p.m. match against Siena.
