Field Hockey Takes Down Lafayette, 4-1

ITHACA, N.Y. - Junior forward Grace Royer notched five points on two goals and one assist to lead the Cornell field hockey team to a 4-1 victory against Lafayette, Monday evening.

Royer opened the scoring in the seventh minute. With a quick maneuver to move the goalie, Royer cleared the net and dropped the ball into the goal. Six minutes later a hard shot from the top of the circle, by freshman Natalie Stone, made it to junior Julianne Mangano in front of the goalie. Mangano took the ball, made a rapid dodge around the goalie and shot the ball for a second Big Red goal.

Cornell kept up the heat in the second quarter but the Leopards' defense held up a strong wall as the Big Red offense was not able to get a shot on goal. Cornell kept the 2-0 lead going into halftime.

Lafayette came back from halftime with a thirst for a goal. Senior Caroline Turnbull grabbed a rebound during a corner and tipped the ball to fellow senior Sam Di Maio. Di Maio received the ball only to turn around and shoot it into the net for a quick Leopard goal. Just one minute later Cornell answered the Lafayette goal with a speedy shot of their own. Royer tipped the ball into the goal, off a shot from senior Maddy Conklin, to bring the Big Red back to a two-goal lead.

With less than a minute left in the third quarter senior goalie Maddie Henry stopped a possible game-changing Lafayette stroke attempt from hitting the backboard to secure the 3-1 Cornell lead at the end of the third quarter.

Caroline Ramsey scored what proved to be the last goal of the game at 46:59. The freshman midfielder received a ball from Royer to seal the 4-1 Cornell victory.

Lafayette held a 17-5 advantage in shots, with a 7-5 edge in shots on goal. The Leopards also held the advantage in penalty corners, 6-1.

Henry made five saves in 55 minutes of game-play while sophomore goalie Laura Kubit made one save in the last five minutes.
