Field Hockey Falls to Penn in Ivy League Opener

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Junior forward Grace Royer scored two goals but it was Ivy League host, Penn, with the 5-2 win, Saturday afternoon.

The Quakers opened scoring in the eighth minute with a quick score by Alexa Schneck. The Big Red tied the score just over four minutes later when Royer tipped the ball toward goal. The ball was originally brought into the bottom of the circle by Taylor Gladd. She passed it to Bridget Mahoney who deflected the ball to Claire Jones. Jones then deflected the ball to Royer for a Cornell tally. The Big Red entered the first quarter break tied at 1-1.

A Royer goal just 13 seconds into the second quarter led to a Big Red lead, 2-1. After receiving a pass from Jones, Royer took the ball and moved the goalie for an easy backboard touch. Penn's Maddy Fagan answered with a goal of her own with 10:30 on the second-quarter clock. Again, the game was tied at 2-2 going into halftime.

During the second half of the game the Big Red had double the amount of penalty corners as in the first but could not find the back of the net. The Quakers sealed the 5-2 Big Red loss with a three-goal run on Vagelos Field.

Penn held the 18-9 advantage in shots (13-6 shots on goal) as well as the 14-6 edge in penalty corners.

Senior goalie Maddie Henry stopped seven shots while sophomore Laura Kubit stopped one.

The Big Red will travel to Hamilton, N.Y. to face Central New York competitor, Colgate, for a mid-week game on Tuesday (Oct. 1). The faceoff is set for 6:30 p.m.
