ITHACA, N.Y. – The Cornell women's volleyball team (8-2, 1-0) opened Ivy League play with a convincing 3-0 (25-21, 25-16, 25-19) sweep of Columbia (7-3, 0-1) Saturday afternoon at Newman Arena in Ithaca, N.Y.
The Big Red has been building momentum over the past several weeks, now having won six straight contests after rolling past the Lions. Today's win also marks three consecutive wins for Cornell over Columbia dating back to last season.
The Big Red were fueled by Avery Hanan, who notched a season-high 13 kills to go along with a .435 hitting percentage. Joanna Chang also recorded double-digit kills (12) and Jillienne Bennett (8) and Jada Stackhouse (7) were heavily involved in the Big Red attack as well. The group of Hanan, Chang, Bennett, and Stackhouse, were a vital reason Cornell out-hit Columbia .381 to .125 en route to the Big Red's sixth sweep of the season.
Chang filled the stat sheet on Saturday afternoon, registering seven digs, two assists, one block assist, one ace, and a .476 hitting percentage in addition to her 12 kills. The freshman continues to find her groove, and has become a key component of the Big Red's rotation.
The Big Red also bested the Lions in the passing game, recording a .435 setting percentage as compared to Columbia's .292. Zoe Chamness and Emma Worthington continue to set the Big Red attackers up beautifully, notching 23 and 21 assists, respectfully, on the afternoon.
Lily Barber was once again the glue that held the Big Red back row together, capturing a game-high 13 digs. Madison Baptiste also defended well, tallying eight digs to go along with five kills.
The Big Red will look to push its win streak to seven when it hits the road next weekend for a pair of Ivy League matchups against Penn and preseason conference favorite Princeton. Cornell will square off against Penn on Friday, Oct. 4 at 7 p.m. in Philadelphia, Pa., before heading to Princeton for a 5 p.m. first serve on Saturday, Oct. 5.
