ITHACA, N.Y. – After helping the Big Red volleyball team to a 3-0 (25-21, 25-16, 25-19) sweep of Columbia on Saturday afternoon, freshman outside hitter
Joanna Chang has been named the Ivy League Rookie of the Week, the conference office announced Monday.
Chang, who garners the first weekly honor of her young career, filled the stat sheet on Saturday, notching a season-best 12 kills and a .476 hitting percentage to go along with seven digs, two assists, one ace, and one block assist. Chang distributed the ball beautifully from the back row, registering 18 receptions and tallying only one error en route to a .947 reception percentage.
Chang continues to find her groove, and has become a key component of the Big Red's rotation. She is a vital reason why Cornell currently leads the Ivy League as a team in five statistical categories, including hitting percentage (.269), opponent hitting percentage (.132), kills/set (13.50), blocks/set (2.37), and aces/set (1.65).
With Chang's help, the Big Red has now won six straight matches and currently owns an 8-2 (1-0) record, marking the program's best start since the 2005 season. Cornell's 3-0 win over Columbia was not only the sixth sweep of the season for the Big Red but was Cornell's third consecutive victory over the Lions dating back to last season.
The Big Red will look to push its win streak to seven when it hits the road this weekend for a pair of Ivy League matchups against Penn and preseason conference favorite Princeton. Cornell will square off against Penn on Friday, Oct. 4 at 7 p.m. in Philadelphia, Pa., before heading to Princeton for a 5 p.m. first serve on Saturday, Oct. 5.
