Volleyball Defeats Niagara, Falls to Hartford on Day 2 of Cornell Invitational

ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Cornell volleyball team split a pair of matches Saturday at Newman Arena, defeating Niagara, 3-0 (25-15, 25-19, 25-12), before falling to Hartford, 3-2 (21-25, 25-23, 25-23, 19-25, 19-17), in the final day of the 2019 Cornell Invitational.

In the first game of the day against Niagara, Cornell dominated in the first set, defeating the Purple Eagles by a score of 25-15. Niagara was unable to find an answer for Big Red middle blocker Jada Stackhouse, who had five kills on six attempts, also adding four blocks. Cornell out-hit the Purple Eagles, .345 to .000, with 14 kills and just one attacking error to set the tone.

The Big Red continued its strong hitting in the second set, hitting .333 with 14 kills and four service aces. Lauren Stubbs and Madison Baptiste heated up in set two, tallying four and five kills, respectively. Stubbs added four more kills in the third set to give her a game-high 10 on .350 hitting. Emma Worthington was the team leader in assists with 22, while Zoe Chamness added 14. Lily Barber came up big from the service line with five aces.

Overall, Cornell out-hit the Purple Eagles, .307 to .128. Cornell also held a significant advantage in blocks, registering 12 compared to Niagara's six.

The Big Red's contest against Hartford was a battle, and despite Cornell's fight in the fifth set, Hartford held off a late Big Red rally to claim a 3-2 victory and win the Cornell Invitational. With the loss, the Big Red fell to 2-1 after its first weekend.

Cornell was lead by Jillienne Bennett, who registered a game-high 18 kills to go along with three blocks. Stackhouse was once again a force to be reckoned with, notching 12 kills and a .423 hitting percentage. After their performances over the course of the weekend, Bennett and Stackhouse both earned a spot on the Cornell Invitational All-Tournament team.

Samanta Arenas also had a strong showing against the Hawks, totaling 12 kills and leading the team with 20 digs. Worthington once again led the Big Red in assists, tallying 27.

The Big Red will be back in action next weekend when they head west to compete in the Bay Area Invitational on Sept. 13-14, which will be co-hosted by St. Mary's College (Calif.) and the University of San Francisco.
