#14 Men's Squash Pushes #6 Yale To Limit Four Times in 8-1 Loss

1/11/2020 6:26:00 PM

NEW HAVEN, Conn. — Senior Jared Scherl won at No. 9 and the men's squash team took four other matches to the maximize five games against top-flight Yale, but the Bulldogs eventually pulled away for an 8-1 victory in an Ivy League match on Saturday afternoon at Brady Squash Courts.

The order of play put three of Cornell's strongest entries – all with winning records through the team's first five matches – on the courts off the hop. While Yale took a 1-0 lead with a three-game victory at No., the other two matches of the opening rotations – featuring sophomores Nicholas Göth Errington and Alex Dworetzky – went to five.

Yale (4-1, 2-0) – ranked sixth in the country by the College Squash Association – would eventually prevail in those two matches, then clinched the affair in the second wave on the strength of two more five-game victories. It marked just the second time this year freshman Veer Chotrani was defeated at the top spot, and Illia Presman fought back from a two-game deficit at No. 6 before the Bulldogs clinched.

Cornell (2-4, 0-2) – which is ranked 14th – got its lone point in the final rotation from Scherl, one of its captains. He won a tight first game with an extra point, then rolled to win in three. It was his second straight year defeating an opponent Yale, which has now defeated Cornell in 59 of 62 all-time meetings.

The Big Red continues wraps up its weekend road trip at 11 a.m. Saturday with a visit to Brown in Providence, Rhode Island.
