#14 Men's Squash Surges In Final Wave To Top #16 Brown

1/12/2020 8:32:00 PM

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — The men's squash team took a big step forward toward locking up a spot in at least the 'B' Flight of the College Squash Association's National Championships after defeating Brown, 6-3, on Sunday at Pizzitola Sports Center.

Cornell (3-4, 1-2 Ivy League) entered the week tabbed 14th in the CSA's national rankings, essentially defending that position with a victory over 16th-ranked Brown (1-3, 0-3). At the end of the regular season in five weeks, the nation's ninth- through 16th-ranked teams will compete in the Hoehn Cup.

The Big Red was powered by a sweep from the top third of the ladder, led by a team-high fifth victory of the season from freshman Veer Chotrani at the No. 1 position. Junior Illia Presman won in four games at No. 6, and the teams entered the final rotation tied at 2.

Five-game victories from sophomores Nikhil Arjunan Iyer (No. 3) and Thomas Mocorrea (No. 8) eventually helped the Big Red clinch the match, avenging a rare loss to Brown in its last visit to Providence in 2018. Sophomore Charles Culhane rolled to a three-game sweep at No. 2, and senior Jared Scherl (No. 9) won for a second time this weekend to account for the Big Red's other points. The victory was Cornell's 19th in its last 20 meetings with Brown.

The Big Red is back on the road next weekend in Philadelphia, where it takes on Virginia at 4:30 p.m. Saturday and Drexel at noon Sunday in a pair of non-league matches.
