#9 Women's Squash Gears Up For Three-Match Weekend

1/14/2020 10:00:00 AM

ITHACA, N.Y. — The women's squash team is preparing for a busy weekend in which it will play three matches in three days at three different facilities.

Cornell (3-2), which is ranked ninth in the nation by the College Squash Association as of Monday, starts the weekend with a match against #6 Stanford at 6 p.m. Friday at MSquash Accelerator in Port Chester, N.Y. The Big Red then shifts down to Philadelphia for a pair of non-league matches, taking on Virginia in a neutral-site match at 4:30 p.m. Saturday at Penn Squash Center, and then Drexel at 11 a.m. Sunday at the Dragons' home facility.

The Big Red is coming off a 6-3 victory over #12 Brown on Sunday in Providence, Rhode Island. Cornell rolled to wins in four of the five matches during the final wave to split the weekend after an 8-1 setback against #4 Yale on Saturday. Sophomore Sivasangari Subramaniam won both days to improve to 4-0 from the No. 1 position, accounting for the lone point in the match versus the Bulldogs.

Stanford (2-2) is ranked sixth, starting its semester with a 9-0 victory at home over #19 Tufts. The Cardinal started the season ranked fourth, but it slipped two spots after its first three matches of the season Nov. 22-23. A 5-4 victory over Penn was followed by a 5-4 loss to Drexel and 6-3 setback against Princeton. Cassandra Ong is a perfect 4-0 from the middle of the ladder, while Elena Wagenmans is 3-1 from the top spot. Cornell is 11-10 all-time against Stanford.

Virginia (5-3) is ranked 10th, one spot behind Cornell, going into Wednesday night's match against visiting Brown. With all of their eight matches to date being decided by big margins of 8-1 or 9-0, the Cavaliers have taken the opportunity to shuffle their lineup quite a bit. All 15 women on the roster have competed in at least two matches. Emma Jinks is the highest-ranked player on the team, posting a 3-4 record from the No. 1 position. The Big Red split two matches against Virginia last season, avenging a 6-3 loss in the regular season with a triumph by the same margin in the semifinals of the Hoehn Cup in February.

Drexel (5-4) is ranked fifth, having ascended to that position on the strength of 5-4 victories over Stanford and Columbia in late November. After suffering a 9-0 loss to #2 Trinity in its first action since the semester break, the Dragons rebounded with an 8-1 victory over #14 Middlebury on Sunday. Like Cornell, Drexel has strength at the top of the ladder with Karina Tyma sporting a 6-2 record from the No. 1 position, and Alina Bushma is 6-1 at No. 2. The teams played in a down-to-the-wire match last season, with Cornell threatening an upset before Drexel rallied to sweep the final rotation. Lily Zelov and Mimi deLisser were among the Big Red's winners that day.

Sunday's match at Drexel will be broadcast through the host school's website.
