ITHACA, N.Y. - Seniors
Grace Graham and
Paige Lewis led the Cornell women's ice hockey team to a 2-0 win over Colgate, Friday evening.
Eight minutes into the first period, Lewis scored the first Big Red goal. During a penalty kill, in which Lewis was in the box, junior
Kendra Nealey sent the puck straight to the Colgate goalie from the other side of the rink. Taking the puck, the goalie tried to send it back to her team but Graham intercepted the pass for a quick turnaround and a shot. As the shot rebounded, Lewis came out of the box and scored the goal.
Coming back from the first intermission, Cornell totaled 18 shots on goal. With 9:04 on the clock, Graham shot the puck from a scramble in front of the goal line for the Big Red's second goal. Junior
Devon Facchinato sent the puck to senior
Jaime Bourbonnais, who was sitting just in front of the goalie. Bourbonnais, Lewis and Graham continued to fight the defense in front of the goal to get the puck past the goalie when Graham saw an opening and sent the puck into the air and the net.
Feeling the pressure, the Raiders brought the goalie to the bench with two minutes left. During the 6-on-5, the Big Red took a penalty and for 38 seconds fought to preserve the shutout in a 6-on-4. As Colgate was unable to score, Cornell earned its 17th win on the season.
Junior goalie
Lindsay Browning made 16 saves for her eighth career shutout, seventh this season.
The Big Red returns to action in Hamilton, N.Y. tomorrow (Jan. 25) to face Colgate once more.
