ITHACA, N.Y. - Playing in its first action of the dual match season, the Cornell men's tennis team defeated Binghamton University on Saturday, Jan. 25 by a score of 7-0. The Big Red took two of three doubles matches before sweeping all six matches of singles play inside the Reis Tennis Center.
The pairings of
Alafia Ayeni/
Lev Kazakov and
Evan Bynoe/
Konstantin Kirovski each produced doubles wins for Cornell (1-0, 0-0 Ivy) to secure the doubles point. Doubles wasn't without a challenge however, as Binghamton was victorious at No. 2 doubles. Ayeni and Kazakov were a strong doubles pairing last season, going 5-1 for the Big Red.
It was mostly smooth sailing for the Big Red in singles play, where five of the six matches went just two sets. The Big Red won three sets by a 6-0 score and three additional sets by a score of 6-1. Ayeni was the lone member of the team to drop a frame, but defeated Michael Pawlowicz in three sets (6-3, 4-6, 6-4). It was
Eero Vasa's first time playing at No. 1 singles while wearing the Cornell red and it was a strong debut for the junior, who defeated Kushaan Nath in two sets (6-1, 6-4).
Kazakov, Bynoe,
Daniel Soyfer and Joe McAllister also earned singles victories for the Big Red on Saturday.
Up Next: Cornell continues its season this weekend, facing Michigan State and Colgate on Saturday, Feb. 1. The Big Red welcome Michigan State to the Reis Tennis Center at 12 p.m., with the match against Colgate slated to start at 4 p.m.
